The Price of Humanitarian Courage:
We must protect those who save, support, and help

The NGO "The Tenth of April" deeply mourns the tragic events that occurred on September 4th in Chernihiv during demining operations carried out by the DRC team.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, the injured, the DRC staff, and the entire humanitarian community.

As partners of the Danish Refugee Council, we feel this tragedy especially acutely. Your daily work in conditions of constant risk is a manifestation of dignity, courage, and dedication to humanitarian principles.
At this difficult time, please accept our heartfelt condolences and assurances of solidarity and support. We remain your reliable partner and confirm our readiness to work together for the safety, dignity, and rebuilding of Ukraine.

This tragedy once again reminds us that those who save others daily themselves require proper protection and support.
This is why it is important to speak about systematic measures:
In May 2024, the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2730 was adopted, which highlights the protection of humanitarian personnel, particularly national and local staff, for the first time.

The NGO "The Tenth of April" supports the initiative launched by the UKR CSO Alliance and the Humanitarian Platform of NGOs in Ukraine to implement the minimum Duty of Care (DoC) package - a protection standard for workers and volunteers.
The minimum DoC package should include:

  • Life and/or accident insurance

  • Psychosocial support

  • Individual first aid kits

  • Personal protective equipment

  • Systematic safety training and practical application of all components of the support package

  • Other measures that ensure dignified and safe working conditions

For the NGO "The Tenth of April," supporting this initiative is an important step toward forming a systematic and sustainable approach to the safety and well-being of those who work daily on the front lines of humanitarian missions.
We are convinced: those who save others must be protected themselves.
The safety of humanitarian workers is our shared responsibility.
